As the terminus of the soon-to-be-completed Alps2Ocean Cycleway, Oamaru's Pen-y-bryn Lodge is the perfect place to relax after an exhilarating ride through some of the South Island's most dramatic scenery. Starting at Mt Cook/Aoraki this 324-km cycle trail follows a mostly downhill (and downwind) trajectory through the Ohau mountains, lakes Pukaki, Benmore and Waitaki, and the Elephant Rocks prehistoric formation before it ends at Oamaru harbour. In addition to this trail, Oamaru has several other cycle trails nearby, including the Otago Central Rail Trail, to entice cyclists of all levels.
