Claremont is a destination in its own right. A 2400-acre Estate and private Nature Reserve offering breathtaking scenery, amazing 65 million year old “God’s Marbles” and unique natural rock sculptures plus an optional Land Rover safari tour of the estate and the amazing natural wonders of the Waipara river valley.
Claremont is just 45 minutes easy drive from Christchurch International airport and is a tranquil sanctuary in which to relax and unwind after a long haul flight or to prepare for the return journey. It is also the ideal hub from which to explore Canterbury. It is one of Canterbury’s notable historic homes and is a working high-country station (ranch) , farming sheep, cattle and deer. The 1866 heritage limestone homestead is set on the spectacular Waipara Gorge, within an area designated as being outstanding natural Landscape. It is also close to the renowned Waipara wineries. Guests receive a warm welcome from Richard and Rosie, the owner-hosts, and enjoy comfortable and elegantly furnished guest lounges, shady vine clad verandas, stone-walled terraces and beautiful mature gardens. In-house dining is preceded by hosted pre-dinner drinks with Claremont’s chefs 3-course table d’hote menu with garden-fresh vegetables, organic fruit from Claremont’s orchard or other local produce, complimented by fine Waipara wines.
Accommodation
Exclusive to just twelve lodge guests all guest accommodation is within the main lodge building. The spacious Claremont luxury suite and five homestead guest bedrooms are each individually themed with sumptuous fabrics, fine antiques and luxurious bathrooms.
Local Attractions
Complimentary to guests staying three nights or more is Claremont’s acclaimed Land Rover 4WD safari tour of the Estate. This is optional for guests who stay just one or two nights. It has been described by Destinations Magazine as the most interesting and diverse in NZ. Guests view the fascinating 65 million year old “God’s Marbles”, The KT boundary (the evidence of how the dinosaurs disappeared), the stunning Waipara Gorge and the amazing Bishops Head natural rock sculpture. There are also on site walks. The many nearby Waipara wineries offer wine tasting, cafes and tours. There is whale watching or swimming with dolphins at Kaikoura. Also available are guided trout and salmon fishing, hiking, horse trekking and golf. Hanmer Springs Thermal pools and Spa are all within easy reach.
