Sherwood Lodge

A muscular landscape of sub-alpine pasture, native forest, and mountain ranges, plus a braided river, surround this historic property, built in 1910 as a family home. Big skies, wide open spaces and spectacular scenery will capture your heart and memories.

A Unique Retreat, Accessible Only to a Few

Surrounded by some of the sheep farms for which New Zealand is famous, Sherwood Lodge has been known throughout much of the South Island for its hospitality for nearly 100 years.  Since its conversion from family home to high country lodge in the mid-1980’s, Sherwood has continued the tradition of welcoming guests into a relaxed and comfortable retreat, with great food, spacious rooms, and friendly personal attention.

Entertainment options abound - relax in front of an open log fire with a good book or laze in a hammock with a cool glass of wine, play a game of tennis or swim in the outdoor pool.  Or get more energetic and explore the 7,000 acres next door – by horseback or on foot, 4WD or from the air – there’s a new experience just around the corner.  Or branch out and do day trips up to the marine playground of Kaikoura, the thermal resort area of Hanmer Springs, or the burgeoning wine growers of the district.

However you spend your day, you can be assured of coming back to enjoyable local wine and food, conversation and friendship from resident owner/hosts Craig and Philippa, and butler, Pete.

Sherwood Lodge is family friendly.

Accommodation

Sherwood offers 3 suites and 2 standard rooms.  Like the rest of the lodge, guest rooms are spacious, have great views and retain many of the original Arts & Crafts and Art Deco features of the house.  Accommodation for a driver/guide is also available if needed.

Local Attractions

Sherwood is the ideal location to explore North Canterbury.  In the immediate vicinity you’ll find horse trekking(1 hour – multi-day), trout and salmon fishing (rivers or lakes), game hunting, several country golf courses, farm tours, and fossils in the river below the lodge. In Kaikoura you can go whale watching, swimming with dolphins, pelargic bird spotting, or experience real Maori hospitality.  A short drive away, Hanmer Springs boasts thermal hot pools, spa and massage providers, scenic flights, and adventure activities.

Finding Your Way

Sherwood Lodge is 135km (100 minutes) north of Christchurch, on Sherwood Rd, off the Inland Kaikoura Rd.  75 minutes south of Kaikoura.  45 minutes east of Hanmer Springs.
