WineriesFinally New Zealand wines are receiving the international recognition they deserve -particularly the Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, which rival those produced anywhere in the world. Many New Zealand wineries offer good quality informal dining during the day, with menus designed to showcase the best of local produce. Good local wines can be bought, with superior vintages often available from their cellars. There are more than 200 wineries in New Zealand, collectively producing about 2,000 wines. While four companies produce 90 per cent of the country’s wine, small passionate producers abound. Wine regions are dotted the length of the country, with the three main grape growing areas being Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay - both on the east coast of the North Island - and Marlborough - at the top of the South Island. Vineyard tours, including wine tasting and winery purchases, are available in all wine regions. Your lodge host rightly takes pride in the local wines, and will be able to recommend the best place to find the style you seek.
